Villages in Alaska can range from under 100 people to a few hundred people to over a 1,000.  Many village residents are Alaska Natives and maintain a culture rich with thousands of years of history and traditional subsistence living. In modern day standards life is simple but challenging. Family is the core and dogs play a large part of the family. Everything revolves around the weather with extremes that both humans and dogs learn to tolerate withstanding cold and wind that would be unheard of in the lower 48.  The hardiest canine athletes on earth come from and compete in this climate. This page will post the hard work done by Alaskans and friends who live in Alaska’s wilderness and bush villages.

Dog food donations have been such a great success there is currently no longer a need for further donations at this time.  Friday a delivery of 20,000 lbs. was made to the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) warehouse in Fairbanks, donated by the Human Society US through Hills Science Diet.  Currently there is approximately 28,100 lbs. on hand at
the CAP hanger in Fairbanks and 2,400 lbs. at the Alaska Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Anchorage for a total of 30,500 lbs.  In addition to the donors mentioned the Alaska Mill and Feed and numerous other private donors purchased with a charge card at the 49er Dog Food Store and Coldspot Feeds in Fairbanks and delivered to the hanger.

Currently 21,375 lbs. have been delivered to the villages of Eagle, Circle, Stevens Village, Tanana, and Russian Mission by the CAP, Holland America Princess, a contracted commercial carrier and a private truck donor.  To date all donations of dog food have totaled 51,900 lbs.!

But there is still the human side of the disaster, needs that must be dealt with and the rebuilding of lives.  Transportation costs are expensive.  AKVOAD is asking for help through the donation of
materials and cash to help cover those fuel costs for air transportation and purchasing of recovery materials.  Donations can be made through any Alaska USA Credit Union to the 2009 Spring Floods
donation account.  Additionally, donations can be mailed to AKVOAD/ AIIDRC

2535 Crestwood Street, Anchorage , 99508.

Over 1000 dogs are in disparate need of food in interior Alaska. Over the last two weeks towns and villages along the Yukon River were hit with rivers of ice boulders large enough to dislodge cabins and water deep enough to carry them away. Villagers and mushers moved their pets to higher ground having to leave food stores and supplies behind. They need our help now!
